What to expect and look for to fix a kitchen countertop

Getting the kitchen top done right saves you a lot of problems and a lot of money.

But what is right ?

What top mount and undermount sink means

The basin sits on the granite top The basin hole is not required to be polished as the basin covers the sides of the hole. This is cost saving

The basin hole needs to be polished and cut at the factory

The hole is normally 15 to 20 mm smaller than the size of the basin

Concrete top and cabinet

The granite sits on top of a concrete slab.

It is an option to leave the bottom section open or put in doors to form a cabinet

A fascia or riser of at least 100mm is required to hide the exposed side of the concrete

The granite should also cover any exposed section of the concrete stand

Other essential points to consider

1.  If a cabinet is made, ensure the material is of acceptable

    quality to withstand the weight of the granite.

    Consequences : the granite top could break into pieces or  

    cracks can appear.

2.  For a undermounted sink, ensure that the support for the 

    sink is sufficiently strong.

    Consequences : it is a load on the pipes.

As the basin lies below the wooden top as well, support for the basin should be strong.
